Aguda Stencil Family: A Practical Font for Real-World Projects

If you’ve ever tried to cut a stencil by hand or ordered one from a sign shop, you know the struggle: letters that look perfect on screen become a mess of falling centers and broken bridges when you actually cut them. That’s exactly why the Aguda Stencil Family exists. Designed by Pablo Balcells for Graviton Font Foundry in 2014, Aguda Stencil is the stencil version of the popular Aguda font family. It isn’t just a clean sans-serif with gaps—it’s a carefully thought-out tool for anyone who needs durable, readable lettering across different materials and sizes.

The family comes in 16 styles, split into two distinct groups. The eight “Stencil 1” styles feature a narrow stem, which works best for large type and rigid materials like metal, acrylic, or thick cardboard. The eight “Stencil 2” styles have a wider stem, making them ideal for smaller type and lightweight or flexible materials such as paper, thin plastic, or fabric. That dual-system approach is what sets Aguda Stencil apart: it gives you the right tool for the job without forcing you to compromise on legibility or design.

Where Stencil 1 Shines: Big, Bold, and Rigid

Think about the last time you saw signage at a construction site, a warehouse, or a warehouse door. Those letters are usually large and painted or sprayed through a stencil. The narrow stems of Stencil 1 keep the counters open and readable even when the letters are eight inches tall. The bridges—the small gaps that keep the stencil intact—are strong enough to hold the center of an "O" or "D" but thin enough to avoid looking clunky. If you’re creating industrial labels, shipping crate markers, or even large wall murals, Stencil 1 gives you a crisp end result with fewer broken connections.

For a small business owner who paints their own storefront hours on a glass panel or a maker who etches metal tags, the narrow stem means you can use a single stencil for multiple uses without worrying about tearing. The rigid material cuts cleanly, and the font stays legible from a distance. I’ve seen workshop owners stick with basic block stencils for years because they never found a font that balanced sturdiness with style. Aguda Stencil 1 fills that gap nicely—it’s professional without being boring, and it holds up to repeated use on rough surfaces.

When Stencil 2 Takes Over: Small Scales and Delicate Materials

Flip the coin to the other side, and you’ll find Stencil 2. This version is built for situations where the type is small—think labels on jars, serial numbers on electronics, or text on cardboard boxes. In those cases, the stencil material itself is often thin, like paper or plastic film. If you tried to cut a narrow-stem stencil at a small point size, the bridges would be too thin and break immediately. The wider stem of Stencil 2 solves that by leaving more material around the letterforms, making the stencil physically stronger even when the letters are tiny.

Let’s say you run a small Etsy shop selling handmade candles. You want to stencil a small logo onto the glass jars—something around half an inch tall. Using Stencil 2 at 18pt keeps the "E" and "S" from falling apart when you lift the stencil. The letters remain bold enough to read from arm’s length, and the wider gaps don’t smear as much when you dab on paint. Similarly, if you’re a freelance designer creating packaging prototypes, Stencil 2 gives you the confidence to test small runs without investing in expensive die-cut stencils. You can print the stencil on a laser cutter or even cut it by hand with a craft knife.

Workshops and Maker Spaces

People who work with wood, metal, or acrylic often need to stencil text onto signs, toolboxes, or storage bins. The Aguda Stencil Family lets them pick the right weight for the job. For a large plywood sign (say 24×36 inches), Stencil 1 at 120pt keeps the letters open and the stencil intact. For a small metal tag on a keychain, Stencil 2 at 10pt works without tearing. The family gives makers a single consistent look across multiple projects, which is great for branding a personal workshop or a small production line.

Food and Beverage Packaging

Distilleries, breweries, and artisanal food makers often use stencil fonts on their labels to achieve a rugged, handcrafted look. The two-stem approach means you can use Stencil 1 for the large batch number on the side of a barrel, and Stencil 2 for the fine-print ingredients on the back. Both styles share the same underlying letter shapes, so your branding stays cohesive. A brewery owner could spray-paint kegs with Stencil 1 and print box labels with Stencil 2, and the brand would still feel unified.

Education and Classroom Projects

Teachers and educators constantly stencil letters for bulletin boards, poster titles, and hands-on craft activities. When cutting letters by hand from construction paper, the wide stems of Stencil 2 are much easier to cut out accurately. For a “Welcome” sign on a classroom door, Stencil 2 at 72pt gives kindergarten kids a shape they can trace and cut without frustration. And because the font is actual stencil-style, not just a decorative type, the letters have the authentic bridge marks that kids associate with real stencils.

Digital Mockups and Prototyping

Even if you never cut a physical stencil, the Aguda Stencil Family is useful for digital mockups where you want to simulate the stencil effect. Graphic designers use it for concept boards, pitch decks, or social media graphics that need a rough industrial aesthetic. Since both Stencil 1 and Stencil 2 are available in four standard weights (Thin, Light, Regular, Bold), you can match the visual weight to your design without switching fonts. That saves time when you’re iterating between large text blocks and small captions.

Event and Wedding Signage

At outdoor weddings or parties, signs often get painted on wooden boards, corrugated plastic, or burlap. The weather and handling can quickly ruin delicate stencils. Using Stencil 1 for directional signs and Stencil 2 for table numbers ensures that the letters survive the wind, rain, and a hundred guests brushing past. I’ve seen planners print reversible stencils on adhesive vinyl, apply them to wood, paint over them, and then peel away for a perfect painted sign. The stem width choice reduces the risk of the vinyl lifting at the bridges.

What to Consider Before Using Aguda Stencil

Before you download or buy the Aguda Stencil Family, think about the physical process you’ll use. If you’re cutting by hand with a craft knife, Stencil 2 is almost always easier because the larger stems mean less intricate cutting. If you’re using a CNC cutter or laser cutter, Stencil 1 gives you more design flexibility, especially on surfaces that need precise spacing. Also consider the material thickness: for steel or thick acrylic, the narrow stems of Stencil 1 are fine, but for thin plastic film, Stencil 2 will resist tearing longer.

Another practical point: the font works best when you set it at sizes that match the stem width. For Stencil 1, try to use it at 36pt or larger; below that, the bridges become too thin for most physical stencils. For Stencil 2, 12pt to 72pt is a sweet spot, but you can go smaller if your material has high tear strength. Test a few letters on scrap material first—it’s the only way to know if the stem width matches your real-world conditions.

Also keep in mind that stencil fonts by nature require some spacing adjustments. Because of the bridges, letters like “C” or “G” may look slightly open on screen but print exactly as designed. Don’t try to close the gaps in your design software—that defeats the purpose. Trust the font’s engineered bridges. They’re there to make your physical stencil last longer and print cleaner.

Why This Font Family Works for Everyday Creators

The Aguda Stencil Family doesn’t try to be everything to everyone. It recognizes that stencil users face a real trade-off between strength and detail, and it gives you a practical choice instead of a compromise. For the small business owners, makers, designers, and hobbyists who need to produce consistent stencil work across multiple scales and materials, having both Stencil 1 and Stencil 2 in one family saves time and reduces waste. You aren’t hunting for a different font every time you switch from a large sign to a small label.

If you’re someone who enjoys hands-on projects—whether it’s spray-painting a garage nameplate, labeling product boxes for a side hustle, or creating a classroom banner—Aguda Stencil gives you the confidence that your letters will come out looking sharp every time. The next time you reach for a stencil font, give yourself the luxury of choosing the stem width that matches your material. That’s what Aguda Stencil Family was built for.
